Karya sastra secara umum bisa dibedakan menjadi tiga: puisi, prosa, dan drama. Secara etimologis istilah puisi berasal dari kata bahasa Yunani poesis, yang berarti membangun, membentuk, membuat, menciptakan. Sedangkan kata poet dalam tradisi Yunani Kuno berarti orang yang mencipta melalui imajinasinya, orang yang hampir-hampir menyerupai dewa atau yang amat suka kepada dewa-dewa. Dia adalah orang yang berpenglihatan tajam, orang suci, yang sekaligus merupakan filsuf, negarawan, guru, orang yang dapat menebak kebenaran yang tersembunyi.
Menurut Kamus Istilah Sastra (Sudjiman, 1984), puisi merupakan ragam sastra yang bahasanya terikat oleh irama, matra, rima, serta penyusunan larik dan bait.
Watt-Dunton (Situmorang, 1980:9) mengatakan bahwa puisi adalah ekpresi yang kongkret dan yang bersifat artistik dari pikiran manusia dalam bahasa emosional dan berirama.
Carlyle mengemukakan bahwa puisi adalah pemikiran yang bersifat musikal, kata-katanya disusun sedemikian rupa, sehingga menonjolkan rangkaian bunyi yang merdu seperti musik.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge mengemukakan puisi itu adalah kata-kata yang terindah dalam susunan terindah.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (Situmorang, 1980:8) mengatakan bahwa puisi mengajarkan sebanyak mungkin dengan kata-kata sesedikit mungkin.
Putu Arya Tirtawirya (1980:9) mengatakan bahwa puisi merupakan ungkapan secara implisit dan samar, dengan makna yang tersirat, di mana kata-katanya condong pada makna konotatif.
Herman J. Waluyo mendefinisikan bahwa puisi adalah bentuk karya sastra yang mengungkapkan pikiran dan perasaan penyair secara imajinatif dan disusun dengan mengonsentrasikan semua kekuatan bahasa dengan pengonsentrasian struktur fisik dan struktur batinnya.
Ada juga yang mengatakan bahwa puisi adalah bentuk karya sastra yang mengekspresikan secara padat pemikiran dan perasaan penyairnya, digubah dalam wujud dan bahasa yang paling berkesan.
Yang Membedakan Puisi dari Prosa
Slametmulyana (1956:112) mengatakan bahwa ada perbedaan pokok antara prosa dan puisi. Pertama, kesatuan prosa yang pokok adalah kesatuan sintaksis, sedangkan kesatuan puisi adalah kesatuan akustis. Kedua, puisi terdiri dari kesatuan-kesatuan yang disebut baris sajak, sedangkan dalam prosa kesatuannya disebut paragraf. Ketiga, di dalam baris sajak ada periodisitas dari mula sampai akhir.
Pendapat lain mengatakan bahwa perbedaan prosa dan puisi bukan pada bahannya, melainkan pada perbedaan aktivitas kejiwaan. Puisi merupakan hasil aktivitas pemadatan, yaitu proses penciptaan dengan cara menangkap kesan-kesan lalu memadatkannya (kondensasi). Prosa merupakan aktivitas konstruktif, yaitu proses penciptaan dengan cara menyebarkan kesan-kesan dari ingatan (Djoko Pradopo, 1987).
Perbedaan lain terdapat pada sifat. Puisi merupakan aktivitas yang bersifat pencurahan jiwa yang padat, bersifat sugestif dan asosiatif. Sedangkan prosa merupakan aktivitas yang bersifat naratif, menguraikan, dan informatif (Pradopo, 1987)
Perbedaan lain yaitu puisi menyatakan sesuatu secara tidak langsung, sedangkan prosa menyatakan sesuatu secara langsung.
Unsur-unsur Puisi
Secara sederhana, batang tubuh puisi terbentuk dari beberapa unsur, yaitu kata, larik , bait, bunyi, dan makna. Kelima unsur ini saling mempengaruhi keutuhan sebuah puisi. Secara singkat bisa diuraikan sebagai berikut.
Kata adalah unsur utama terbentuknya sebuah puisi. Pemilihan kata (diksi) yang tepat sangat menentukan kesatuan dan keutuhan unsur-unsur yang lain. Kata-kata yang dipilih diformulasi menjadi sebuah larik.
Larik (atau baris) mempunyai pengertian berbeda dengan kalimat dalam prosa. Larik bisa berupa satu kata saja, bisa frase, bisa pula seperti sebuah kalimat. Pada puisi lama, jumlah kata dalam sebuah larik biasanya empat buat, tapi pada puisi baru tak ada batasan.
Bait merupakan kumpulan larik yang tersusun harmonis. Pada bait inilah biasanya ada kesatuan makna. Pada puisi lama, jumlah larik dalam sebuah bait biasanya empat buah, tetapi pada puisi baru tidak dibatasi.
Bunyi dibentuk oleh rima dan irama. Rima (persajakan) adalah bunyi-bunyi yang ditimbulkan oleh huruf atau kata-kata dalam larik dan bait. Sedangkan irama (ritme) adalah pergantian tinggi rendah, panjang pendek, dan keras lembut ucapan bunyi. Timbulnya irama disebabkan oleh perulangan bunyi secara berturut-turut dan bervariasi (misalnya karena adanya rima, perulangan kata, perulangan bait), tekanan-tekanan kata yang bergantian keras lemahnya (karena sifat-sifat konsonan dan vokal), atau panjang pendek kata. Dari sini dapat dipahami bahwa rima adalah salah satu unsur pembentuk irama, namun irama tidak hanya dibentuk oleh rima. Baik rima maupun irama inilah yang menciptakan efek musikalisasi pada puisi, yang membuat puisi menjadi indah dan enak didengar meskipun tanpa dilagukan.
Makna adalah unsur tujuan dari pemilihan kata, pembentukan larik dan bait. Makna bisa menjadi isi dan pesan dari puisi tersebut. Melalui makna inilah misi penulis puisi disampaikan.
Adapun secara lebih detail, unsur-unsur puisi bisa dibedakan menjadi dua struktur, yaitu struktur batin dan struktur fisik.
Struktur batin puisi, atau sering pula disebut sebagai hakikat puisi, meliputi hal-hal sebagai berikut.
(1) Tema/makna (sense); media puisi adalah bahasa. Tataran bahasa adalah hubungan tanda dengan makna, maka puisi harus bermakna, baik makna tiap kata, baris, bait, maupun makna keseluruhan.
(2) Rasa (feeling), yaitu sikap penyair terhadap pokok permasalahan yang terdapat dalam puisinya. Pengungkapan tema dan rasa erat kaitannya dengan latar belakang sosial dan psikologi penyair, misalnya latar belakang pendidikan, agama, jenis kelamin, kelas sosial, kedudukan dalam masyarakat, usia, pengalaman sosiologis dan psikologis, dan pengetahuan. Kedalaman pengungkapan tema dan ketepatan dalam menyikapi suatu masalah tidak bergantung pada kemampuan penyairmemilih kata-kata, rima, gaya bahasa, dan bentuk puisi saja, tetapi lebih banyak bergantung pada wawasan, pengetahuan, pengalaman, dan kepribadian yang terbentuk oleh latar belakang sosiologis dan psikologisnya.
(3) Nada (tone), yaitu sikap penyair terhadap pembacanya. Nada juga berhubungan dengan tema dan rasa. Penyair dapat menyampaikan tema dengan nada menggurui, mendikte, bekerja sama dengan pembaca untuk memecahkan masalah, menyerahkan masalah begitu saja kepada pembaca, dengan nada sombong, menganggap bodoh dan rendah pembaca, dll.
(4) Amanat/tujuan/maksud (itention); sadar maupun tidak, ada tujuan yang mendorong penyair menciptakan puisi. Tujuan tersebut bisa dicari sebelum penyair menciptakan puisi, maupun dapat ditemui dalam puisinya.
Sedangkan struktur fisik puisi, atau terkadang disebut pula metode puisi, adalah sarana-sarana yang digunakan oleh penyair untuk mengungkapkan hakikat puisi. Struktur fisik puisi meliputi hal-hal sebagai berikut.
(1) Perwajahan puisi (tipografi), yaitu bentuk puisi seperti halaman yang tidak dipenuhi kata-kata, tepi kanan-kiri, pengaturan barisnya, hingga baris puisi yang tidak selalu dimulai dengan huruf kapital dan diakhiri dengan tanda titik. Hal-hal tersebut sangat menentukan pemaknaan terhadap puisi.
(2) Diksi, yaitu pemilihan kata-kata yang dilakukan oleh penyair dalam puisinya. Karena puisi adalah bentuk karya sastra yang sedikit kata-kata dapat mengungkapkan banyak hal, maka kata-katanya harus dipilih secermat mungkin. Pemilihan kata-kata dalam puisi erat kaitannya dengan makna, keselarasan bunyi, dan urutan kata.
(3) Imaji, yaitu kata atau susunan kata-kata yang dapat mengungkapkan pengalaman indrawi, seperti penglihatan, pendengaran, dan perasaan. Imaji dapat dibagi menjadi tiga, yaitu imaji suara (auditif), imaji penglihatan (visual), dan imaji raba atau sentuh (imaji taktil). Imaji dapat mengakibatkan pembaca seakan-akan melihat, mendengar, dan merasakan seperti apa yang dialami penyair.
(4) Kata kongkret, yaitu kata yang dapat ditangkap dengan indera yang memungkinkan munculnya imaji. Kata-kata ini berhubungan dengan kiasan atau lambang. Misal kata kongkret “salju: melambangkan kebekuan cinta, kehampaan hidup, dll, sedangkan kata kongkret “rawa-rawa” dapat melambangkan tempat kotor, tempat hidup, bumi, kehidupan, dll.
(5) Bahasa figuratif, yaitu bahasa berkias yang dapat menghidupkan/meningkatkan efek dan menimbulkan konotasi tertentu (Soedjito, 1986:128). Bahasa figuratif menyebabkan puisi menjadi prismatis, artinya memancarkan banyak makna atau kaya akan makna (Waluyo, 1987:83). Bahasa figuratif disebut juga majas. Adapaun macam-amcam majas antara lain metafora, simile, personifikasi, litotes, ironi, sinekdoke, eufemisme, repetisi, anafora, pleonasme, antitesis, alusio, klimaks, antiklimaks, satire, pars pro toto, totem pro parte, hingga paradoks.
(6) Versifikasi, yaitu menyangkut rima, ritme, dan metrum. Rima adalah persamaan bunyi pada puisi, baik di awal, tengah, dan akhir baris puisi. Rima mencakup (1) onomatope (tiruan terhadap bunyi, misal /ng/ yang memberikan efek magis pada puisi Sutadji C.B.), (2) bentuk intern pola bunyi (aliterasi, asonansi, persamaan akhir, persamaan awal, sajak berselang, sajak berparuh, sajak penuh, repetisi bunyi [kata], dan sebagainya [Waluyo, 187:92]), dan (3) pengulangan kata/ungkapan. Ritma adalah tinggi rendah, panjang pendek, keras lemahnya bunyi. Ritma sangat menonjol dalam pembacaan puisi.
